Candy Cane
This is Candy Cane's story nine years later....not nine lives, but nine years later.
When you think about cat stories, you may think about their nine lives. But I am telling this story nine years after I adopted Candy in December 2005 from the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. I worked in Menands at the time and decided to go to the shelter at lunchtime. My husband and I had lost our dear old cat, Bud Light, several months before. Bud Light was a very, very, very special kitty, but it was time to add a little more love to our home.
Candy Cane was the name of a bright-eyed older kitten. She just want wanted to be held and we had an immediate bond. I picked her up after work that same afternoon. Everyone at the shelter was so wonderful.
At nightfall, I met my husband near the decorated Christmas tree at the Empire State Plaza and told him I had a special surprise. In the back seat of my car was our new friend Miss Candy. Nine years has passed and she has been a love all of this time.
I'm telling her tale not just because it's a Christmas story, but because everyone who has ever worked to find forever homes for pets should know more of the happy endings. Candy is just one of them.
Thanks to everyone at the shelter for giving Candy the best of care. She is a cherished part of our family and her snuggles will bring us more joy during another holiday season.
