Cooper
Exactly 12 years ago, I was still reeling from the loss of my previous cat of 19 years, Buddy, in July of the previous year. I just happened to be out and about that day when I came upon the shelter. In an off-the-cuff decision, I pulled in just to take a look. I walked into the adoption room, and in the first cubicle I set eyes upon a striking orange and white lad of nine months named Dakota. He had it in for me from the moment our eyes met. As I approached the window, he stood on his haunches and reached his beautiful pink padded paws upwardly for my attention. My fingers met his paws, and I immediately knew he was coming to my house for a forever home.
Cats I had loved would for the most part be shy and timid, and some hid for days. Upon opening the carrier, the newly renamed Cooper stepped out, looked around, walked around and decided that yes! this place will do very nicely. So began a 12-year run of deep love for each other, crazy play, naps and sleeping next to me every night. I cannot explain how much that little boy meant to me. This morning, I had to say goodbye to my best pal ever, as he suffered from congestive heart failure and was progressing to a point where in my broken heart, I knew it was time to part with him. I took him to be put to sleep and I went in with him while it was done. I believed I owed it to him and am glad I did.
Tonight as tears roll down my face, I write this rather long tale because I believe this story is the epitome of a happy tail -- 12 years of wonderful partnership which I will never forget. I hope that someday soon I will take a ride again and, being as I am nearing 60, would consider an older cat who may have gotten a raw deal, be it his life friend had died or for some reason had to part company. Hopefully this cat will fill the immense void in my heart that I have tonight.
I thank my little boy for all of the joys he gave me, and for making my house a home. God bless you,Cooper. I will miss you so much and I will never forget how much fun and love we shared. Thank you also to the Humane Society for doing such a great service to everyone involved.
